New Mexico basketball head coach Steve Alford likes to build from the basket out. Not only do the Lobos possess one of the most coveted centers in college basketball with Alex Kirk, but Alford is expecting to fill the post with yet another 7-footer.
Alford set to address the problem of height for New Mexico two years ago with the recruitment of Kirk, and has certainly filled the void with the 7-foot tandem of Kirk and 2012 recruit Obij Aget.
Aget committed to New Mexico last year and will join the team in June. Though still extremely raw, Aget will provide substantial support for the Lobos in the paint. The Mountain West is an incredibly undersized and New Mexico will be able to capitalize on the deficiencies of their opponents early in 2013.
The Lobos, and Alford, still have a few problems to address in reference to their new asset. Aget has unparalleled size but lacks the strength to be a true force on the block. New Mexico expects Aget to defend the basket and to support the flow of the offense while Kirk is resting on the bench. Kirk, now a sophomore, will most likely stay all four years in a Lobos uniform and should be a good example for Aget early on in the Sudan native?s career.
While playing high school ball for La Lumiere School in Indiana, Aget averaged 11 points, nine rebounds and two blocks each game. The Mountain West Conference is the perfect scenario for Aget to develop his talent, as the only player who can stop him is on the same team.
It?s obvious Aget will not make an immediate, dominating impact for New Mexico, but he?s certainly a project worth taking on for Alford and the Lobos. Aget graduated in the Class of 2012, even though he could pull off at least 35-years-old. The 7-footer considered attending Alabama, Florida State, Missouri and Texas in addition to New Mexico.
With two 7-footers likely to receive substantial playing time at the start of the 2013-14 season, it appears that Alford and the Lobos have gotten a bit greedy. Can you blame them?
