Polish cosmetics maker Inglot dies at 57

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? Wojciech Inglot, a Polish chemist and businessman who founded and ran a cosmetics company, Inglot, that grew into an international success with nearly 400 stores in 50 countries, has died. He was 57.

Inglot died unexpectedly Saturday after suffering internal hemorrhaging, a longtime friend of Inglot's and associate of the company, Mariusz Ziomecki, told The Associated Press. Inglot was rushed to a hospital in Przemysl, the eastern Polish city where his cosmetics are produced, but doctors were unable to save him.

Inglot was born in Przemysl on June 11, 1955. He studied chemistry at Krakow's prestigious Jagellonian University. After graduation he began his first chemical manufacturing operation in 1983, when Poland was still under communist rule.

After Poland began its transition to a market economy in 1989, Inglot turned to producing cosmetics, finding success first at home and then internationally with a range of nail polishes, eye shadows and other products. Today the Inglot logo can be seen large-scale at Times Square in New York City and the cosmetics are sold in nearly 400 boutiques and malls in some 50 countries, including at Macy's.

Recently Inglot found unexpected success with a breathable nail polish that became a surprise hit with Muslim women. The enamel, called O2M ? for Oxygen and Moisture ? allows air and water to pass through it, unlike traditional varnishes that completely occlude the nail.

Traditional varnishes pose a religious problem for observant Muslim women because of prayers five times a day that require a pre-prayer washing ritual. Islamic scholars have long said water must run over the hands and arms, even the finger nails, leading many women to avoid using polish.

It was developed about four years ago but started to become a hit with Muslim women after an Islamic scholar in November declared that it was permissible under Muslim law because it allowed water to reach the nail.

Inglot told the AP in an interview last week that he developed the breathable polish with health-conscious women in mind, and that he was taken by surprise by the reception it was getting with some Muslim women.

Przemysl Mayor Robert Choma expressed shock at the loss of an affable man who created hundreds of jobs locally. Choma said he had been planning to bestow the city's honorary citizenship on Inglot.

"An exceptional person and friend has departed," Choma said, according to Polish media reports. "Nothing foreshadowed this tragedy."

Inglot is survived by his mother, a brother and a sister. A funeral is planned for noon on Wednesday in the Salezjans Church in Przemysl, the company said in a statement.

NVIDIA Tegra 4i Phoenix reference phone hands-on (video)

NVIDIA Tegra 4i Phoenix reference phone handson video

NVIDIA's latest venture in the mobile world, called the 4i, was introduced last week ahead of Mobile World Congress, and fortunately the chipset maker brought the product to Barcelona embedded in a reference phone known as "Phoenix." The 8mm-thick handset, which will find a home in the labs of manufacturers and carriers (as well as the desks of many third-party devs), sports a 5-inch 1080p display, 13MP rear-facing camera, PRISM 2, Chimera, DirectTouch and LTE (we're told that most major bands are included for testing purposes). As it's not geared for general consumer use, so it's not the thinnest, sleekest or best-looking device, and the back doesn't even seem to snap completely shut. Units are being sampled as we speak, and we should expect to see devices hit the market in nine to twelve months. Since it's still pretty early in the process, we weren't able to turn on the phone or benchmark the chipset; the only exception to this rule, as you'll see in the video, was when a rep showed a gaming demo on his particular unit.

While the 4i is the smaller brother of the Tegra 4 family, it's still expected to be quite powerful. The chip, which is designed specifically for smartphones (tablets will take advantage of Tegra 4 instead), features four 28nm Cortex-A9 r4 (beefed-up from the standard A9) cores that can be clocked up to 2.3GHz, 60 GPU cores (compared to 72 on the T4) and an integrated i500 LTE baseband modem. For additional comparison, NVIDIA showed us the two sibling boards side-by-side. Head below to check out our galleries of Phoenix and the two chipsets, as well as a brief video that shows off the graphics prowess of the 4i.

AB de Villiers will lead South Africa during the ODI against the Netherlands

South Africa will tour the Netherlands at the end of May in preparation for the Champions Trophy, which will be hosted by England in June, where their first match will be against India on June 6.

How to use your iPhone or iPad to help you sleep and relax better

How to use your iPhone or iPad to help you sleep and relax better

February is Fitness Month at iMore and Mobile Nations, and that means our whole community is involved -- readers, listeners, viewers, and most of all, forum members. All week you've been sharing how you use your iPhone and iPad to stay rested and relaxed, and the apps and accessories you use along with it. Sure, we sweetened the deal by putting a $100 iTunes gift card up for grabs -- and we'll do it again next week -- but you guys brought serious game.

So what did you tell us?

Our winner, da_abades, had this to say:

Cool, i love this topic and have lots of apps for my iPhone about this!

  1. Sleep Cycle alarm clock: Everybody should know about this one or has seen it on the top of the App Store, it's amazing! If you place it as the above image shows it tracks your movements and analizes your sleep. When you wake up it will show you a graph of your sleep, but most important it wakes you up knowing when you are less in deep sleep. It also has some relaxing sounds to help you get in to sleep!

  2. Ambiance: This is really the best of the best out there! Includes over 2500 free sounds to download and listen. You can create customized sound mixes, cycle through playlists and even wake up to relaxing sounds. (You can purchase more HD sounds)

  3. BreatheMate: This app assists you to follow breathing patterns. For example you chose 4-20 seconds holding your breath, (automatically calculates depending on what you selected) 2-10 breathing-out, 1-5 seconds breathing-out and it will start repeating (the app is predeterminated for 10 repeats). I really like this one for it's simplicity, nice design and ease to use just after download.

  4. Yoga Free: 250 Poses & Yoga Classes: Simple and straight foward yoga app, all what you want and need. 250 Poses and some nice extra features (Calendar, quotes...)

Thanks da_abades! We also had great tips from many of the other entrants.

bamf-hacker, among others things, likes to track his sleep the hard-ware-way:

  • Fitbit One Wireless Activity Plus Sleep Tracker, Black: The FitBit uses the accelerometer to determine how much you are moving while you sleep. You need to wear the FitBit in the included wrist strap, and it is fairly accurate. The sync to the iPhone is done via Bluetooth and as long as the app is running in the background, it will do so automatically. You can then look at the app to see the hours of sleep you received, and it also shows you how many times you were awake. It also gives you the option to edit the sleep in case it is not set correctly.

metllicamilitia, among other things, likes to avoid active thoughts the built-in way:

  • Music app: I also use the Music app to listen to my meditative state inducing sound files, I currently have two. And I will set my phone to Do Not Disturb and then play my sound file and turn the screen off so that I am not disturbed while I am meditating. And since I use passive noise canceling headphones, I am free to meditate wherever I am and not being disturbed by my surroundings.

We had a lot of other great posts as well, and a lot of great recommendations, so make sure you check them all out, and if you haven't already, please add yours to the thread!

iPhone Safari | Safari mobile is the best iPhone internet browser

safari iphone iconiPhone Safari is a smaller version of the full Safari internet browser that was developed by Apple to run on both Apple computers and PC's. Safari is simply the best internet browser available for Mac and PC next to Firefox in my opinion.

?

Mobile Safari is an iPhone application that comes pre installed on every iPhone and iPhone 4, and it was one of the biggest selling features of the iPhone when it came out. It allowed full desktop style browsing experience while other smart phones had a smaller version of the website that was very difficult to read and browse.

iPhone Safari set the standard and changed the way mobile phones and PDA's (Personal Data Assistance) view web pages.

Mobile iPhone Safari is simple to use, stable, and supports international languages. No matter what language a website is, you will most likely be able to view and read its contents on your iPhone or iPhone 4.

safari-iphone application text enteryWhen you start mobile Safari you have two areas to enter texts at the top. The blue rectangle shown in the picture is where you enter the address of a website such as www.cnn.com or simply just cnn, mobile safari will finish the address for you.

The red rectangle on top right in the picture is the Google search by default. However, you can change it to Yahoo if you want as I will show you later from Settings.

iPhone safari full page browser iPhone applicationMobile Safari runs in two modes. A desktop mode which shows the full page as you would see it on a desktop computer, and an iPhone or mobile mode which displays the page in more compact format.

Those modes are automatically switched depending on the website you are visiting.

Although you can't control in which mode a website will open, there are some iPhone hacks that forces a website to start in desktop mode, as some people like me don't like the compact mobile version. Moreover, many iPhone browsers such as iCabMobile and Atomic nowadays allow you to select which desktop browser you want your iPhone to mimic. Full screen browsing and many other performance improvements add-ons to Mobile Safari are also available in Cydia. Visit the Safari mobile hacks page to learn more.

iPhone safari double tap to zoom iphone applicationsafari iphone double tap zoom the iPhone application

When a website is viewed in its desktop mode, you can double tap on an article to zoom in and read it. The mobile mode has bigger text already? and you can't use the double tap or pinching to zoom in and out. The site is basically fixed in size and that is another reason I like the desktop mode better.

iPhone safari zoomingIf you double tap on another article or a picture, it will zoom in to fill the screen. If you want to zoom more, use the two finger pinch out board to zoom in.

Double tap again on the text or picture to zoom out in stages, until you get back to the full page again.

iPhone Safari Features:

A tap on any link opens that link. However, if you tap and hold on a text link, you get a menu that gives you options to open the link in a new window, or copy the link to the clip board.

iPhone safari tap and hold iPhone applicationpaste text from iPhone safari

Then, you can paste this text link to any text field in any iPhone application. To paste the text, just open any text application like iPhone notes and tap and hold on a text field, then tap the paste icon as shown in the picture above.

iphone safari text copy to other iPhone applicationsMoreover, you can easily copy texts or a full paragraph from a website.

For example, tap and hold on a paragraph you want to copy, a blue transparent rectangle will appear around the paragraph , and another small menu with small icons will appear.

Tap on the copy icon which is shown by the small red rectangle to copy the text to the iPhone memory. Then you can paste the text as shown before to any text application or even an SMS text application.

iphone safari save image to other iPhone applicationIt is also possible to copy a picture from any website to your iPhone photo album in your iPhone. Tap and hold on a picture, then tap the Save Image button. The picture can? be found in your iPhone Photos album.

iPhone safari optionsAt the bottom of iPhone Safari application, there are some icons.

The two arrows at the bottom left allow you to go back and forward if you have already visited some links.

The Bookmarks button with the blue square is where your bookmarks are stored. This button allow you to select any of your bookmarks to quickly open them.

The last button with the Green square shows you how many pages are open currently, a maximum of 8 is allowed. Some iPhone Safari hacks allows you to change this a a more visual tabs format.

iphone safari new-pageAlso, tapping the last button allows you to slide your finger to skim through those open pages.

You can close any of the currently open pages by taping the little plus button at the corner of each open page.

At the bottom left, you can open a new page by typing the New Page button. A blank page will open, and the number of open pages will increase.

iphone-safari-plus-buttoniphone safari optionsTapping the Plus button from the options at the bottom, opens a menu with 3 options.

You can add the website to your bookmarks, or add it to the home screen where the link to the website will be shown on your home screen just like any iPhone application icon.

The last button gives you the option to mail the link to someone from your contacts.

Finally, iPhone Safari can be viewed in landscape mode giving a nice, wide full screen view which is really amazing on the iPhone 4's retina display.

iphone safari full screen browser iPhone application

One feature that iPhone Safari lacks is the ability to play flash video. This of course is an iOS lack of support of flash video. However, there is an iPhone browser that actually supports flash video playback right within the browser which is called SkyFire. You can find SkyFire in the App Store for $2.99.

?

iPhone Safari Settings:

iphone settings application, iPhone application iconiphone-safari-settingsThere are many settings in iPhone Safari that you can access from the Settings application on the iPhone . Tap the Settings app and move down to Safari.

Tap Safari and you will have many options to turn on or off. I really don't touch many of those options, as leaving them as default is probably best.

iphone safari search engineiphone safari search

safari-iphone text enteryHowever, there are a couple of important features that might be interesting.

You can define your default search engine that you see on the top right of every iPhone Safari page. Select Yahoo or Google search engines as your default from the Search Engine button shown above.

The AutoFill is a very nice feature in mobile Safari, and I would leave it on unless you share your iPhone with others, then I would turn it off. This feature saves your information that you enter when filling a? form or an application when you order something online using mobile safari for example.

iphone safari cookiesAlso from this menu, you can turn on or off JavaScript, Plug-Ins, Block Pop ups, and Accept Cookies.

As you visit websites in iPhone Safari, your history is stored, and if you visit a website again, you won't have to type the complete address again.

By just typing the first few letters, the full address will be completed for you from the iPhone memory.

You can clear History, clear cookies, and clear Cashe from memory, so all this stored information is cleared.

iOS 5 Features for iPhone Safari:

Reading List:

Reading list is a feature that was added in iOS 5. It is different than just adding a site to your favorite. If a site can be viewed in reading list mode, you will see the button "Reader" next to the URL as shown below. Simply tap the Reader button, and your site will be converted to a reading list mode.

iOS5 features for iPhone safariiOS 5 features for iPhone safari Reading List

This mode is great for reading. It fits the whole site to your iPhone screen, and everything including photos just fit your screen for best reading experience. From the reading list mode, you have some more options to improve your display of the site. For example, you can increase the font size,

iOS 5 reading list featureReading list for iPhone safari

or you can add the site to your favorite, to your reading list, or mail, tweet, or print.

Private Browsing:

iPhone safari for iOS 5Private browsing is another great iOS 5 feature that was added to iPhone Safari.

This is a great feature if you want to browse sites that you don't want to be tracked by history.

So once you close Safari, the session is ended, and all the history is deleted.

Martian Pink Samsung Galaxy Note 2 goes on sale in Korea (Rik Henderson/Pocket-lint : Latest News)

image: Pocket-lint : Latest News

UK release?

Samsung has introduced a "Martian Pink" version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, although only in Korea for the time being.

It is available now on all three carriers in the country and Pocket-lint has asked Samsung if there are any plans to bring the device to the UK. We'll update when we find out.

The company has been prolific with variant colour schemes for its devices of late, with a Garnet Red version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 LTE model hitting Korea for Valentine's Day and being planned for release in other regions soon. However, "Martian Pink" is not a name bandied around too often. ...

Will Steam Box Kick Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo Out of Gaming?

In Star Wars, Yoda famously said that there were only two Sith Lords -- "No more, no less; a master and an apprentice."

His words held true for the game industry for several years. Sega and Nintendo (OTC: NTDOY) successfully prevented Panasonic (NYSE: PC), Philips, NEC Corporation and other manufacturers from making headway. When Sony (NYSE: SNE) beat the odds in 1995, it was the kiss of death for Sega, ensuring that the industry continued its two-console race.

That changed when Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) entered the scene. Instead of ousting Sony or Nintendo (both of which were too powerful to be taken down), Microsoft carved its own niche.

By the time the Xbox 360 was released, Microsoft had become a fierce competitor. According to data compiled by VGChartz, the console has outsold PlayStation 3 by roughly 1.6 million units.

Now that PlayStation 4 has been unveiled, Microsoft is all but guaranteed to announce the next Xbox this summer at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. With Nintendo's Wii U already on store shelves, it seems that the three-console conflict will continue this generation.

However, there is one company that hopes to disrupt the battlefield: Valve. Best known for the Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress and Portal series, Valve is currently building a console that revolves around its online game service, Steam.

No physical games are sold through Steam; instead, all game content is downloaded online. This is the kind of platform that other game manufacturers would like to implement in the future.

For now, the demand just isn't there -- download speeds are too slow and consumers are still heavily attached to the traditional disc medium. Game downloads also require massive hard drives, which has created another set of challenges that have yet to be resolved.

Valve has an advantage in this regard, as its primary customers prefer to download games online. In designing the Steam Box, the company's first console, Valve is attempting to serve that market while reaching out to new customers.

"The internet is super smart," Valve CEO Gabe Newell told The Verge. "If you do something that is cool, that's actually worth people's time, then they'll adopt it. If you do something that's not cool and sucks, you can spend as many marketing dollars as you want, [they] just won't."

Newell must be convinced that he is doing something very smart with the Steam Box. Even if he is, that does not mean it will be the death of a stalwart.

Just as the industry grew several years ago and allowed a third player, Microsoft, to enter the scene, gaming is bigger now than ever before.

More than 240 million individuals purchased the last three consoles -- Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Steam Box should be able to take a piece of that massive pie without hurting the competition.

That said, most companies do not hit a homerun on their first try. While the original Xbox sold less than 25 million units, Xbox 360 sold more than 74 million units.

Steam Box could be very successful, but it will likely attain that success on a much smaller scale than the big players of the industry.

When the company launches its second console, however, it may have evolved into a formidable console maker. At that time, Valve might have what it takes to oust an existing player -- but it won't happen yet.

Pacific Region sweeps Army Athlete, Coach of Year awards

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 15, 2013) -- Soldiers from the Pacific Region swept the 2012 Army Male and Female Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year awards.

All-Army softball players Sgt. Michael Dochwat Jr., of Fort Shafter, Hawaii, and Sgt. Ashley Walker of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, were selected as the athletes. All-Army men's volleyball coach Sgt. Angel Rivera of U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan in Seoul, South Korea, was named coach of the year. They were selected by a panel at Army Installation Management Command headquarters on Joint Base San Antonio Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

As a team captain, Dochwat, 38, helped the All-Army men's softball team snap All-Air Force's four-year stranglehold on the U.S. Armed Forces Championship trophy by winning the annual tournament at Fort Sill, Okla. He batted .719 with 10 home runs and 24 RBI in eight games and was named to the All-Tournament Team and All-Armed Forces squad that competed in the Amateur Softball Association's National Championship Tournament in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Dochwat helped an American Legion/Easton squad win the United States Specialty Sports Association's Military Worlds varsity A division in Panama City Beach, Fla., where he was an all-tournament selection. He also led an Armed Forces team to a runner-up finish in the Hawaii State Softball Championships C division. And he traveled to South Korea to help an American Legion international squad finish second in the Pacific Wide Open Softball Tournament.

As if he wasn't busy enough playing softball, Dochwat also managed the Halawa Park Little League baseball team and served as hitting instructor for the girls' fast-pitch softball team at Campbell High School that finished runner-up in the Hawaii State High School Championships.

Despite being surrounded by more experienced players, Walker, 23, served as a team captain and led the All-Army women's softball team to the Armed Forces Championship with an 8-1 record. On the diamond, she moved from first base to third base and continued to exhibit flawless defense. At the plate, she batted .565 en route to being unanimously selected to the All-Tournament Team and the All-Armed Forces Team that finished second at the ASA National Championships in Oklahoma City. At nationals, Walker batted .455 and was third on the team in RBI.

Shortly before reporting to All-Army Softball Camp, Walker lost her husband, Sgt. Brian Walker, who was killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan. Both Walkers were military police in the same unit. Ashley stayed with her softball team at Fort Sill, Okla., while members of the Walkers' unit placed a brick in Brian's honor at the Military Police Memorial Grove at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

"I just needed to play All-Army Softball for my husband," Walker said of her biggest fan. "And we won the gold medal."

Rivera led the All-Army men's volleyball team to back-to-back Armed Forces Championships with a 12-0 record during the 2011 and 2012 tournaments. Four of his players were named to the All-Tournament Team.

As the U.S. Armed Forces head coach, Rivera took six All-Army players to the 2012 Counseil International du Sport Militaire Volleyball Championships in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He also coached the U.S. military men's team at CISM's 2011 Military World Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Rivera, 29, is a community-service stalwart at Yongsan, where he gets American Soldiers, KATUSA Soldiers, young athletes and Korean locals to come together for several clean-up and social events throughout the year.
