Presence? features photographs by Lydia Anne McCarthy and mixed media works by Mia Yoon at Block Gallery, and airing concurrently at Block2, Systemic by Kia Mercedes Carscallen. The works featured in Presence use scale, physical space, color and focus to respond to interactions and boundaries between subject and viewer. A reception will be held at Block Gallery with music by Onoheim on June 7!

Lydia Anne McCarthy, Cameron

Lydia Anne McCarthy?s large-scale portraits take advantage of her handmade camera?s ability to alter focus, color and dynamic range, shrouding the subject in mystery. Unlike the standard portrait, where the intent is to bring forth the core personality of the sitter, McCarthy focuses instead on the qualities that she believes her subject to possess. Mia Yoon?s mixed media works, consisting primarily of papier-m?ch? dots arranged in a grid-like manner, use color and scale to alter the viewer?s perception of the surrounding atmosphere and space. Throughout Yoon?s work is a strong sense of order, which provides a foundation for the work?s energetic colors.

At Block2, Kia Mercedes Carscallen?s video, Systemic, depicts a face covered in a heavy, mud-like substance. As the video progresses, this substance fractures to more clearly reveal the eyes and mouth. This unknown person?s labor to move beneath the mask asks for viewers to self-reflect and to also consider their demarcation between self and other.
