Termites could mean the kiss of death to some homes and they are more common in certain climates. A great way to take preventive measures against these pests would be a do-it-yourself home inspection.
Alterra, a pest control company, has come out with some great tips for spotting termites or suitable living conditions for termites on your property. The following are some of the areas of entry or areas frequented by termites and you will need to inspect them.
-Cracks in bricks, expansion joints or cement
-Window sills and frames, and especially windows in basements.
-Any wood construction material that is used for flooring, walls or support beams inside and outside a home.
-Areas outside the home such as door frames and windows, porches, decks, wood piles, debris piles near the home and fence posts.
-Anywhere that concrete meets wood, such as steps and porches. Look for signs of cracking in between.
-Extra attention needs to be paid to any wood structure in basement areas or crawlspaces.
The following are some of what you will find as signs of infestation during your inspection:
-Holes in wood paneling or wood beams
-Large areas of swarming termites. These will be most common during the months of March through June, and then again September through October.
- Be on the lookout for any clumps or piles of broken wings near any kind of light sources such as windows, lightbulbs and lamps.
-Any mud tunnels found in and around your property. This is what termites use to travel and is a definite sign of infestation.
If you find your inspection proves you have termites or have the potential for a termite infestation then it?s time to call a professional and get the problem under control!
