Three dead in shooting near Texas A&M campus

Police stand ready Monday near the Texas A&M University campus in College station.

Updated at 4:13 p.m. ET: A police constable and a civilian were killed when a gunman opened fire Monday near the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station.?The gunman, who was injured in a gunbattle with police, later died as well, police said.

College Station police responded to a home near George Bush Drive along the southern boundary of the university after gunshots were reported, Assistant Police Chief Scott McCollum said. When officers arrived, they came under fire.?

Officers found Brian Bachmann, 41, the elected constable for Precinct 1 in Brazos County, on the ground and began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. He ?was pronounced dead at an area hospital, McCollum said.


Bachmann had been a Brazos County sheriff's deputy since 1993, according to the?Facebook page for his 2010 constable's campaign.

In addition to Bachmann, an unidentified civilian was pronounced dead and three other people were injured, not all of them by gunfire, McCollum said.

College Station officials later said that a third person had died. The Associated Press, citing police sources, reported that the third victim was the gunman.

Campus officials issued an alert?early Monday afternoon to faculty and students for an "active shooter" two blocks southeast of the university, which houses former President George H.W. Bush's presidential library.
