Parenting Style | Articles @ Redbright

By far, the most important teachers a child will know are his or her parents and family members. Yet, there are no handbooks for raising children, making proper parenting styles a point of conflict for many families. This article will share a couple ways to keep a happy home despite your different parenting styles.

The first thing you should consider is that your children learn from everything they see you and your spouse do. Especially when problems arise, teaching your children communication and cooperation with others, by actually showing them how, will help them tremendously in today?s world. By this, children will be less likely to judge others and more willing to listen and find mutual ground to work together with others. This gives you an opportunity to teach them how to listen and communicate effectively with others, cooperating to come to a peaceful resolution to any problems and conflicts. Under no circumstances should your children be exposed to disagreements or conflicts without them seeing how these are either addressed or solved.

Along with this, it is vital that children learn the value of consistency. When the time (or times) come to discipline your children, especially when there are different parenting styles, consistency is perhaps the most important factor. Parents do not always agree on the kinds and lengths of punishment, but once it has been set, both parents should definitely abide by this and not go back and change it. Whenever one parent goes back and changes punishments given out, very often the other parent may appear mean or too strict, or otherwise not as powerful. Learning from mistakes and understanding consequences is very valuable for growing children, so consistently explaining punishments will help them a great deal. Your children will undoubtedly benefit from witnessing their parents remaining strong, consistent, and united, even when they do not initially agree.

Children often become more thoughtful in their actions when they know what the rewards and consequences of those actions are prior to making them. When these are laid out before them, children will be less confused and more confident when making decisions. With this, while parents should be united and in agreement, they should also consider their child?s personalities and emotional traits, so as not to implement a counterproductive system. It is important that the children feel some way connected to both rewards and punishments, or else they may not learn the value, and differing values, of various actions.

As they grow older and encounter more people of all kinds and backgrounds, being able to communicate and cooperate with others in spite of any differences will be an increasingly valuable character trait. In fact, as long as you show consistent unity and cooperation, it could actually be a good thing if you and your spouse have different parenting styles. As your children take on similar personality traits and behavior habits, not only will your children become valuable family members, they will also become productive members of society.
