The Liberator, the first completely 3D-printed gun, gets test-fired (video)

The Liberator, the world's first completely 3Dprinted hand gun, gets fired video

The (almost) all-plastic 3D-printed Liberator pistol was announced by Defense Distributed late last week, but with the gun's blueprints and construction details now live on the company's own DefCAD design site, it's also released a video taken during its testing. In front of a Forbes onlooker, the clip apparently shows a .380 caliber bullet being fired by the Liberator.

The only non-plastic part of the design is a common nail, which acts as the firing pin. Defense Distributed's founder Cody Wilson has worked over a year on the project, apparently citing the one-shot pistols that were designed to be air-dropped over France during World War II as inspiration -- also called the Liberator. This modern version is, however, formed of 15 components made inside a Stratasys Dimension SST 3D printer. The video of the test shot and more details are right after the break.

Norway's chess superstar has cross-over appeal

STAVANGER, Norway (AP) ? He does fashion shoots with Liv Tyler, enjoys soccer-style sponsorships deals and was recently named one of Time Magazine's 100 most influential people. Who is this superstar? The world's top-ranked chess player.

With his trendy look and athletic physique, Norway's Magnus Carlsen has brought an injection of cool to the normally sedate world of global chess ? extending its popularity beyond its niche following. The 22-year-old's home country is buzzing with excitement as he competes in a tournament here just months before he tries to crack the greatest prize in the game: the chess World Championship.

In November, the young Norwegian challenges the reigning world champ, Viswanathan Anand, for the title, which typically is contested every other year. The inaugural Norway Chess competition in Stavanger, starting Tuesday, is being widely touted as a dress rehearsal for the championship that is tentatively slated to be played in Chennai, India, where Anand enjoys home court advantage.

With the lure of Carlsen and the 43-year-old Anand, and the 275,500 euros prize money, the competition has attracted one of the strongest lineups ever assembled for a chess tournament. Even with the withdrawal in April of world No. 2, Vladimir Kramnik, the 10-man competition will feature seven of the world's top 10 players, and nine of the top 16, all vying for the 100,000 euros top prize.

"It is very good timing for us. It is very big for Norway that Magnus is doing so well and this probably wouldn't have been possible without him," said Norway Chess chairman Kjell Madland. "We hope it will be the first of very many big chess moments in Norway."

The competition is the first example of oil and gas-rich Norway, today one of the most successful welfare states in the world, leveraging Carlsen's brilliance to try to earn a place alongside more traditional chess superpowers like Russia, Armenia and the United States.

"It is right to say that when nations are in good shape, they tend to throw up good chess players," said Simon Terrington, a British chess writer, evoking Russian chess legend Garry Kasparov's observation that every world champion is a representative of the geopolitical age.

Russian mastery in the shape of Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov in the 1980s helped prop up an otherwise creaking Soviet ideology. Later, Viswanathan Anand's triumph in the World Championship in 2000 and his reign as world champ since 2007 has coincided with the re-emergence of India as a great world power. Carlsen took Anand's place at the top of the monthly world rankings in July 2011. Anand has since slumped to 5th.

Now Carlsen's prodigious brilliance is seen by some as bringing intellectual and cultural heft to the social welfare models of Nordic Europe, particularly Norway.

"Chess is connected to what you can call a kind of prestige in the sense that many people look upon the best players as very intelligent and many countries would like to be associated with this," said Joeran Aulin-Jansson, president of the Norwegian Chess Federation. "We hope that the next Magnus Carlsen will come from Norway, though the chances in such a small country are fairly slim."

If not a necessarily a geopolitical shift, the tournament here certainly represents chess' generational shift bringing into sharp focus the edge afforded by youth.

In a game rarely associated with feats of physical endurance, Carlsen prepares for tournaments by mentally revising openings while pounding a treadmill. He will be the youngest competitor at Norway Chess. But he is among six of the world's top eight, all competing here, who are still under 30.

"These long tournaments are quite tiring and long games are very tiring, especially at the end," he told The Associated Press. "If you are in good shape and can keep your concentration you will be the one who will profit from your opponents' mistakes. In general towards the end of the tournaments younger players have that advantage so the other players will have to try to equal that by having good fitness as well."

His fitness matches his unusual style of favoring the middle and long game over obsessive strategizing about opening exchanges.

"I do focus quite a bit on the opening," Carlsen said. "But I have a different goal. Some people try to win the game in the opening. My goal is to make sure I get a playable position and then the main battle is going to happen in the middle game and the later game."

The strategy has worked. Earlier this year, he passed Kasparov's record to attain the highest chess rating ever in the world governing body FIDE rankings. With his modeling contract alongside Liv Tyler for fashion label G-Star Raw, soccer-style sponsorship slogans on his clothing and unnervingly fast and aggressive decision making, the emergence of this telegenic young chess superstar has also helped spur interest in the game not seen since the '70s and '80s ? the heydays of the Russian masters and the American Bobby Fischer.

Norwegian grandmaster Simen Agdestein, who will provide commentary on the Stavanger tournament over the Internet, says the interest in Carlsen has been astounding.

In April's Candidates tournament in London, in which top players faced off for the right to play Anand in November, Agdestein's Internet connection became patchy whenever Carlsen was competing.

"All of the top players around the world, and lots of other interested people, were watching him. I don't think the bandwidth could handle it," Agdestein said.

In Stavanger, the round-robin format, in which each of the 10 players will accumulate points by competing against every other competitor, ensures Carlsen will face Anand.

"I don't think it really matters which of us wins that game in Stavanger," Carlsen said. "The kind of momentum that I have going into the November match will be decided by the tournaments I play. I can disassociate the earlier match whatever the result."

Aulin-Jansson is not so sure.

"Whoever wins that game, going into the World Championship, it will be like having a 1-0 lead in a soccer match," he said.

Ask Engadget: best desktop PC speakers?

Ask Engadget best desktop speakers

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from James, who wants to break into audio mixing, but needs some noisyboxes for his desk. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

I'm no audiophile, but I would like some decent quality sound for my desktop. I've tried 4.1, 2.1, 2.0 setups but none of them made me very happy, which isn't helping my attempts to get into professional audio work. Is there a lower-end line of speakers that the pros use that I'd be able to afford?

Fortunately for you, James, we can turn this question over to our podcast producer, who suggested that you could do worse than a pair of KRK RP6G2 Rockit speakers, which come in at $400 for a pair. They're studio monitors rather than purely desktop speakers, but if you want to start working in audio then you're probably better off with these. Of course, it wouldn't be Ask Engadget unless we turned this question over to our clever crew of commenters, so if you know of anything that's better (or cheaper) then fire your answer into the comments below.

Bug-eyed camera gets wide angle view - through 180 lenses

We may all be able to get a bug's-eye view of the world with new camera technology being developed by University of Illinois researchers. Like an insect's compound eye, their device uses many tiny lenses to form an extremely wide-angle image with a few interesting qualities.

Most cameras work by gathering light through a single large lens at the front of the camera, and using other internal lenses to focus that light onto a flat surface, like film or a digital sensor. And human eyes work much the same way.

But the eyes of many arthropods, including the likes of the common housefly, are totally different: They use huge numbers of "ommatidia," tiny lenses that take in a small piece of the overall image. The patchwork of tiny perspectives is assembled at the center of the eye; the result is a complete image, though it must be very different from what we see.

A team at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, led by John Rogers, has attempted to replicate this, albeit on a smaller scale. The team's initial effort is a "modest" 180 lenses arrayed over a similar number of tiny image sensors. A computer collates the data from all these micro-cameras and pieces together the bigger picture.

It's the first such system that does everything the insect eye does, and successfully at that. Interestingly, despite showing nearly a 160-degree range, the resultant image shows none of the familiar distortion associated with ultra-wide-angle lenses. Rogers explained in an email to NBC News:

For a full insect type eye like the one that we constructed, the center of the field of view is exactly the same as the periphery ? no distortions, loss of resolution, or reduction in illumination intensity. The construction essentially allows one to look in all directions at once.

Indeed, going beyond even the current wide view is part of the planned evolution of the device. Some animals have eyes that see in front and behind them at the same time. The device is adjustable ? the circuitry is flexible and adapts as the researchers "blow it up like a balloon," as Rogers described it to Nature.

But in order to get a decent image, they'll need more "eyes": 180 lenses may sound like a lot, but only small, relatively simple insect eyes have that many ommatidia ? fire ants and bark beetles, for instance. Rogers believes the idea is scalable to the level of dragonfly eyes, which may have 20,000 lenses, or even beyond that.

Unfortunately, the high-precision tooling necessary for such complex machinery and lens elements isn't available to the team yet. But such a powerful and interesting project is sure to warrant further development. Alternative imaging techniques, such as lightfields in the Lytro camera or inverted compound imagers like the 50-gigapixel AWARE-2, have been the subject of much attention over the last few years.

The paper, "Optical devices: Seeing the world through an insect's eyes," appeared this week in the scientific journal Nature.

NJ gov signs overdose law, Bon Jovi applauds it

PATERSON, N.J. (AP) ? Just a few months after his daughter survived a drug overdose, Jon Bon Jovi joined New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie Thursday for the signing of a law to encourage reporting of overdoses so victims don't end up dead.

Bon Jovi called the law a lifesaver and encouraged other states to do the same.

"I hope that Governor Christie's actions here will cause other states to stand up and to pay attention and also to follow in his footsteps," Bon Jovi said before accompanying the Republican governor on a visit with patients at a drug rehabilitation center.

The New Jersey law seeks to assure timely medical treatment for overdose victims by encouraging people to seek help without fear of being arrested for drug possession.

Bon Jovi's daughter overdosed in a dorm at Hamilton College in upstate New York last year. Prosecutors dropped drug charges against Stephanie Bongiovi and another student under that state's good Samaritan overdose-reporting law.

Bon Jovi, who has a home in New Jersey, did not bring up his daughter's case at the bill-signing, and neither did the governor. In a December interview, Bon Jovi said he was shocked to learn of her overdose.

"She was doing great. Then a sudden and steep decline. Hopefully, we caught it when we did and that's the end of it. But who knew?" said Bon Jovi, a father of four.

The governor and singer told patients during their visit they should be proud of their recovery.

Christie has called the war on drugs a failure and has pushed for mandatory treatment for all non-violent drug offenders.

As elected officials, the governor said Thursday, "it's our obligation to ensure that we are doing everything we can to prevent tragic deaths from drug overdoses."

Families who have loved ones who died of drug overdoses also attended the event, many holding up pictures of those they lost. If people aren't afraid to call 911 in overdose cases, they said, more lives will be saved.

Taking a two-pronged approach to preventing drug overdose deaths, the New Jersey law also provides civil, criminal and professional immunity to health care professionals who prescribe or administer any FDA-approved treatment for drug overdoses. Lay people who administer antidotes in an emergency will also be protected.

Legislative sponsors of the bill say New Jersey is now the 12th state to provide good Samaritan protections for those who report overdoses, and the 11th to give legal immunity to those who administer antidotes.

The law extends protection even to those on parole and probation from being arrested, charged or prosecuted for small amounts of drugs when reporting an overdose.

The measure includes the core of two bills that the governor, a former federal prosecutor, had previously vetoed. He insisted that the law spell out that no immunity will exist for drug traffickers. Protections were also removed for people with restraining orders against them and those facing forfeiture of assets.

"This is a real triumph of public health policy and we thank Gov. Christie and the Legislature for working so hard to come to an agreement," said Roseanne Scotti, state director of the New Jersey Drug Policy Alliance, an advocacy group for drug policy reforms.
