Morning Report: Conor McGregor apologizes to Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate for sexually explicit tweet

During an impromptu Twitter Q&A session Monday, UFC featherweight Conor McGregor gave an off-color response to a question regarding a hypothetical sexual scenario involving UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and fellow Ultimate Fighter coach Miesha Tate. Rather than choose who he'd prefer spending a night alone with, McGregor took the political route by involving them both.

Monday night, no doubt after hearing from UFC code of conduct Czar Matt Hughes, McGregor removed the tweet in question before posting the following apology:

I would like to personally apologize to both Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate. This morning I quoted a song on Twitter in an attempt to make a joke, which I now I see was totally unacceptable and offensive. I have infinite respect for Miesha and Ronda as individuals and as athletes. I have always been a big fan of women's MMA and the incredible talented athletes that compete in the sport. I regret making this offensive comment and I sincerely apologize to anyone whom I offended, but especially Ronda and Miesha.

No word yet from Rousey on the matter, but Tate seems to have chalked it up to just a poor take on humor.

JDS vs. Klitschko? Just ahead oh his rubber match with heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, Junior dos Santos says he's interested in possible future action with the Klitschko brothers. "I think if they give me four months to get prepared, I can beat them," he said. "In the beginning of my all my camps, I do just boxing. I love to train boxing and I think I have enough skills in boxing. I know how to see a good fight. Four months, that's what I need."

Snaps and pops. Mike Pierce has an MRI scheduled Tuesday morning to determine what damage may have been caused in his bout with Rousimar Palhares. "I felt it pop a couple of times, once in my ankle, and once in my knee, but the MRI is going to be the determining factor," Pierce told Ariel Helwani. "I felt it [pop] after the ref was already on top of us and I was tapping the ref. So it was long after the fact."

Gil on Nick. Gilbert Melendez tells Dave Dolye he believes Nick Diaz could be lured out of retirement given the right challenge. "I think with the right opportunity, for the right thing, he'll come out," Melendez said. "Whether it's boxing, whether it's kickboxing, whether it's whatever, some sort of challenge would be great."

Glory for Rico. Glory's Rico Verhoeven explains why he believes he's the No. 1 heavyweight in the world following back to back upset wins over Gokhan Saki and Daniel Ghita. "Hard work... I've been boxing a lot with one of the top competitors in the world, Tyson Fury, and his trainer took me on the pads and showed me small stuff I can fix. It dropped in my head like 'yeah, I can do this.' First people just said 'oh, he has big legs, he can kick', now it's 'he can kick AND he can punch.'"

Moar Chael. In part two of MMA Mania's exclusive with Chael Sonnen, 'The American Gangster' is picking Georges St-Pierre against a very tough Johny Hendricks. "I think GSP is going to win that fight. I will tell you, he's in the toughest fight he's ever had. Johny Hendricks is not only the number one contender, but there's a pretty good margin between Johny Hendricks and the next best guy." 135lbs: Amanda Kelly def. Hannah Stephens via round 1 KO

Stephens had no business being in the cage with Kelly. I thought striking from range, they were sort of equal, but once it got into clinch Stephen's got her Frank Mir on and wilted. Elbows and knees for days.

Kelly says she cuts from 145lbs but she still looks frail. Being a Muay Thai Champion at bantamweight, I have to make the comparison with Miriam Nakamoto. Nakamoto looks much bigger, thicker, and her strikes look a lot more vicious. Kelly has this Martin Kampmann feel to her attack. Nonetheless, it was a decent MMA debut, but my expectations are moderate.

Stampede in India kills 115 during Hindu festival

NEW DELHI (AP) — Uma Devi was halfway across the bridge when people started shouting that it was collapsing.

"I grabbed my son and ran," the distraught woman told Indian TV a day after Sunday's tragedy in central India. "People were pushing and screaming and trying to run away from the bridge. I don't know how I escaped."

The stampede killed 115 people, mostly women and children. Some were crushed to death, while others jumped off the bridge to escape and drowned. Scores more were injured.

They were among the hundreds of thousands of Hindu pilgrims who had come to the Hindu temple in the remote town of Ratangarh in Madhya Pradesh state on the last day of a popular festival.

Many bodies were pulled from the river, but officials said others may have been washed away.

It was not immediately clear how many people were on the bridge when the stampede occurred, but local media said some 500,000 people visited the temple honoring the Hindu mother goddess Durga.

Deadly stampedes are relatively common at temples in India, where large crowds gather in tiny areas with no safety measures or crowd control. In 2011, more than 100 people were killed at a hilltop shrine in the southern state of Kerala.

This is the second time people have died in a stampede at the exact same spot. In 2006, around 50 people died on or around the previous wooden bridge, prompting authorities to replace it with a bigger, two-lane concrete span.

Adding to the chaos, police wielding sticks charged the crowd to try to contain the crowd. That prompted people to retaliate by throwing stones at the officers, said Dilip K. Arya, deputy inspector general of police, said. One officer was badly injured.

Relatives crowded a state-run hospital to collect bodies and searched frantically for loved ones among the injured people being treated there.

Arya told reporters Monday that 115 people had died in the stampede. He expected the toll to rise as some of the injured were in a critical condition.

The state has ordered a judicial inquiry. Engineers say the bridge was not damaged, and images from the scene showed vehicles and people using the bridge after the stampede occurred.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed "deep sorrow and shock over the loss of lives" and asked local officials to help the injured and the families of the dead.

"On this day of festivities, our hearts and prayers are with the victims and their families," the prime minister's office said in a statement.

Russian Director Yuri Bykov Loses Lawsuit to Production Company

MOSCOW -- Russian director Yuri Bykov has lost a lawsuit filed by a production company whose project he quit last year and now must pay $68,300 (2.2 million rubles) in damages.

A Moscow arbitration court has ruled that Bykov, mostly known for his feature Mayor (The Major), which premiered in the Critics’ Week at Cannes last May, violated its contract with a production company called Kinotelefilm, and is to pay damages to the company.

Last year, Kinotelefilm hired Bykov to direct the television series Stanitsa (Cossack Village), which it was producing for Russia’s largest TV station Channel One. In the middle of the shoot, Bykov left the set, and the company said it had to urgently find a replacement.

STORY: Russia's Gorky Studio Adopts New Development Strategy

“Kinotelefilm made some promises and then it introduced stricter conditions,” Bykov said in a statement made when the lawsuit was filed last April. “I realized that I wouldn’t be able to do that job well, so I wouldn’t be ashamed of it, and I made the decision to quit.”

Bykov also pointed to the fact that the company sued him not immediately but six months later, when the news arrived that he was going to Cannes with his film.

Following the Cannes premiere, Major went on to take part in several local and international film festivals and won the best feature film award at the Shanghai International Film Festival.

The figure of damages is made up by Bykov’s advance, interest on that amount and extra costs incurred by the company for finding the replacement.

Neither Bykov nor Kinotelefilm would comment on the verdict.

Ex-Xbox chief Don Mattrick lands at Zynga, officially (update: Ballmer memo)

We just got the news that ex-head of Xbox, Don Mattrick, was out at Microsoft, and now we know where he's going: Zynga. AllThingsD reports that Mattrick is officially the new CEO of the casual social gaming firm, and Mark Pincus, the current CEO, is stepping down from that position to make room for Mattrick's arrival. Fear not for Pincus, however, as the founder of Zynga will maintain a role at the company as chairman and chief product officer. Naturally, Zynga's thrilled with the hire, though we're still waiting word from Redmond on the matter. You can get Pincus' take on Mattrick at the source below.

Update: Steve Ballmer has posted a memo about Mattrick's departure, calling it "a great opportunity for Don" and thanking him for his hard work at Microsoft.
